Israel attack on Iran had nuclear facility, air defence system in target: Reports

Last week, the Isfahan province in Iran faced a series of drone and missile strikes, reportedly originating from Israel. The targeted region housed Iran’s nuclear facility and air defence systems, raising tensions in the already volatile region.

American news agencies attributed the attacks to Israel, although the Jewish state neither confirmed nor denied its involvement. These strikes came in retaliation for Iran’s previous drone, cruise and ballistic missile attacks on Israel, marking a significant escalation in hostilities between the two nations.

Satellite images analysed by The New York Times and the BBC revealed the aftermath of the strikes. The images showed the absence of the Russian-origin S-300 Surface-Air anti-ballistic missile defence system, which was previously positioned northeast of the Isafan International Airport.

The targeted region, armed with an anti-ballistic missile defence system, was reportedly struck by drones and a missile, indicating Israel’s ability to bypass Iranian air defence systems.

Despite Iran’s military claiming no detection of foreign entities entering its airspace during the attacks, satellite images displayed damage to the facility. The S-300 defence system’s radar was reportedly damaged, suggesting successful penetration by Israeli weapons.

Although the extent of the damage remains unclear, Iran International, a critical news agency, reported significant destruction, including damage to the system’s engagement radar crucial for guiding surface-to-air missiles.

The incident underscores the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, with each side denying involvement in the attacks. However, Western officials, as reported by The New York Times, suggested Israel’s calculated message to Iran — demonstrating its capability to evade Iranian defense systems without entering neighboring airspace.

The delivery of the S-300 air defence system to Iran by Russia in 2016 heightened concerns within Israel, given the system’s formidable capabilities. Despite previous pressure from the West leading to the suspension of the deal in 2010, Russia eventually completed the delivery, adding complexity to the already precarious geopolitical dynamics in the region.
