The NCERT has made significant amendments to Class 12 political science textbooks, including dropping references to the demolition of the Babri Masjid and highlighting the ‘decline’ of the Congress after the 1989 general election, according to a report by The Indian Express.
Additionally, the Class 12 history textbooks have been revised, with a focus on linking modern India’s roots to the Harappan civilization instead of the Aryan migration theory.
In the political science textbook, Chapter 8 has been revised to include the Ram Janmabhoomi movement while eliminating mentions of the Babri Masjid. Other revisions relate to the 1990 Mandal Commission, economic reforms starting from 1991, and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
The NCERT stated that these changes reflect the latest developments in Indian politics, including the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya issue.
The Ayodhya developments, rise of the BJP, and politics of ‘Hindutva’ are listed as critical recent developments in Indian politics. References to the Babri Masjid demolition have been removed in several instances. Changes have also been made to history and sociology books for Class 7 to 10.
Regarding the Harappan civilization, recent archaeological evidence suggesting the Harappans as indigenous people has led to changes in the textbooks. The textbooks now emphasize the unbroken continuity of the civilization and call for research into the relationship between Harappans and Vedic people. Class 12 sociology students will be informed that struggles of marginalized communities were not marked solely by poverty and social stigma.
These changes, effective from the 2024/25 academic year, have been communicated to the CBSE, and updated books will be available soon.
This marks the fourth revision of NCERT textbooks since 2014, including a rationalization exercise aimed at reducing the burden on students during the pandemic.
