In a gripping encounter at Lauderhill, Pakistan secured a hard-fought victory over Ireland in their final group match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The match, which held only pride at stake for both teams, showcased a spirited display from both sides despite their earlier tournament struggles.
Ireland, after a shaky start where they were reduced to 15/4, managed to post a total of 106/9 in their allotted 20 overs, largely thanks to resilient contributions from the lower order. Gareth Delany stood out with a crucial 31, supported by Josh Little (22*) and Ben White (5*), who added valuable runs towards the end.
Pakistan’s bowlers dominated early on, with Shaheen Shah Afridi leading the charge by dismissing key Irish batsmen in the opening overs. His impressive spell, which included three crucial wickets, set the tone for Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack. Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim also contributed effectively, picking up crucial wickets to restrict Ireland to a manageable total.
In response, Pakistan began confidently with Mohammad Rizwan and Saim Ayub providing a solid start. However, Ireland fought back admirably, with Barry McCarthy making significant breakthroughs in the middle overs to derail Pakistan’s chase. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Pakistan steadied themselves through the composed batting of captain Babar Azam, who remained unbeaten on 32.
The match came down to the wire with Pakistan needing 13 runs off the last over. Shaheen Shah Afridi, who had starred with the ball earlier, showed his all-round prowess by smashing the required runs off just five deliveries, sealing Pakistan’s victory with two balls to spare.
