T20 World Cup: In a stunning upset at the Guyana National Stadium, Afghanistan seized the top spot in Group C of the T20 World Cup by dismantling a lackluster New Zealand with an 84-run victory. This surprising win marks the first time Afghanistan has ever defeated New Zealand in T20 International cricket.
Afghanistan’s dominance was evident from the onset as opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz showcased a spectacular performance, smashing 80 runs off just 56 balls, including five fours and five sixes. Gurbaz partnered effectively with Ibrahim Zadran, who contributed a solid 44 runs to their opening stand of 103 runs by the 15th over. The Afghan team set a challenging target of 160 runs for New Zealand after being put in to bat.
The momentum continued in Afghanistan’s bowling innings, with left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi wreaking havoc with the ball. Farooqi, who had already demonstrated his prowess with a five-wicket haul in the opening match against Uganda, claimed the first three wickets of the New Zealand innings, setting the tone for his team’s dominant performance. Captain Rashid Khan, a formidable leg-spinner, complemented Farooqi’s brilliance by taking four wickets for just 17 runs, including the crucial dismissal of New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson with his first delivery.
New Zealand, in contrast, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match. Despite efforts from players like Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry, who scored 18 and 12 runs respectively, the team faltered and was eventually bowled out for a mere 75 runs in 15.2 overs.
With this commanding victory, Afghanistan has announced its presence as a force to be reckoned with in the T20 World Cup. The team’s remarkable display of skill and determination has not only secured their position at the top of Group C but has also sent a clear message to their opponents in the tournament.
