A joint statement from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) said Russia was expelled from the World Cup and suspended from all international competitions.

The action comes after Russia is adamant on its stand of a complete invasion of Ukraine while the international communities are imposing sanctions on its president Vladimir Putin.

The joint statement read, “Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.”

It added, “Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people”.

This comes ahead of the Russian men’s scheduled semi-final of the qualifying games on March 24 against Poland. Russia may have also faced Sweden or the Czech Republic on March 29 to play the World Cup in Qatar.
