Russia’s Kazan City was hit by devastating Ukrainian drones, today, Saturday, December 21. The modus operendi of the attack seemed similar to the 9/11 style of attack, in which planes rammed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001.
The Baza Telegram channel shared unconfirmed visuals showing tall buildings hit by deadly aerial devices.
What happened in Kazan?
The drone strike targeted the residential high rises of the Kazan City. A number of videos popped up on X which remarked movement of aerial objects striking two skyscrapers in Kazan which led to huge black smog. The Kazan city is based about 500 miles east of Moscow. Kazan is the Capital of the Tatarstan Republic, having a population of over 1.3 million. As per the reports, The residents of the high rises were evacuated safely with zero causalities.

What Russia said
The city suffered the tragic attack thrice between the 7.40 am and 9.20 am as per the statement of Russia’s Defence Ministry. In addition to, it stated neutralization of six drones but did not disclose the total number of drones involved in the attack.

According to the reports of the Russian media, just after the attack the city was sounded by alarms and Kazan’s flight facilities were temporarily halted. All pre-planned public events in Tartarstan were cancelled as a precautionary measure.
Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, pointed out it has also kept aviation facilities in Izhevsk (a smaller city in the northeast of Kazan) and Saratov (South of Kazan). In Saratov, an identical modus operandi was observed in August, 2024. At least four people got injured during the attack.
The attack from Ukraine came after weeks when Russia cleared “no hope” for negotiations to end the war with Ukraine unless Ukrainian troops withdraw their presence from Russian occupied territory.
