New Delhi: The President of India has appointed former finance secretary Rajiv Kumar as the new chief election commissioner. Kumar, who will succeed Sushil Chandra, will take charge on May 15.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, in a tweet, informed, “In pursuance of clause (2) of article 324 of the Constitution, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Rajiv Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner with effect from the 15th May, 2022. My best wishes to Shri Rajiv Kumar.” The union minister also shared a press note in this regard.

He retired as finance secretary in February 2020. From April 2020 to August 2020 he was appointed as the chairman of the public enterprises selection board.

Meanwhile, The Election Commission of India on Thursday said that polling in the 52 Rajya Sabha seats across 15 states will take place on June 10. The elections will comes barely a month before the Presidential election slated to be held in July.
