In a significant development for India’s aerospace sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, inaugurated the TATA Aircraft Complex in Vadodara, Gujarat, today. This facility is dedicated to the manufacturing of the C-295 aircraft, marking a pivotal step in enhancing India’s defense capabilities.

The C-295 program comprises a total of 56 aircraft, with 16 units being supplied directly by Airbus from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be produced at the new facility. Notably, this complex represents India’s first private sector Final Assembly Line (FAL) for military aircraft. The comprehensive project aims to create a robust ecosystem encompassing all stages of the aircraft’s lifecycle, from manufacturing and assembly to testing, qualification, delivery, and maintenance.

In 2021, the Indian Ministry of Defence formalized a contract worth ₹21,935 crores with Airbus Defense and Space SA for the acquisition of the 56 aircraft. During the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi expressed optimism regarding the future export of aircraft produced at the Vadodara facility, emphasizing the initiative’s potential to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Spain, as well as the overarching “Make in India, Make for the World” initiative.

Reflecting on the project’s origins, PM Modi acknowledged the contributions of the late Ratan Tata, former chairman of Tata Sons, who played a pivotal role in conceptualizing the project. N Chandrasekaran, current chairman of Tata Sons, highlighted that the groundwork for this collaboration with Airbus was laid back in 2012 by Ratan Tata, recognizing his visionary leadership in fostering this groundbreaking partnership.

The C-295 aircraft, which has a payload capacity ranging from 5 to 10 tonnes, is designed to replace the aging Avro-748 aircraft currently in service with the Indian Air Force. Renowned for its versatility, the C-295 can transport up to 71 personnel or 50 paratroopers, making it suitable for a variety of logistical operations in challenging environments.

Known for its reliability, the aircraft boasts a flight endurance of up to 11 hours and can conduct multi-role operations in diverse weather conditions, including both day and night missions. The C-295 is equipped with a rear ramp door for rapid deployment of troops and cargo, and it is capable of short take-offs and landings from semi-prepared surfaces. Additionally, all 56 aircraft will feature an indigenous Electronic Warfare suite developed by Indian defense public sector units, Bharat Electronics Ltd and Bharat Dynamics Limited.
