In a recent exchange on social media platform X, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took aim at OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, expressing disdain for their latest event unveiling new AI models.
Musk’s reaction came after author Ashley St Clair remarked on X that OpenAI’s advancements enable AI to perceive reality in real time for humans, potentially ushering in an era even more concerning than the post-truth era. Elon Musk, a known critic of OpenAI, responded bluntly, stating that the company’s “demo made me cringe.”
Musk’s criticism was echoed by some users on X, with one user commenting, “Can’t wait for the Grok (xAI) version of this demo,” referencing Musk’s own AI initiative, xAI.
This exchange is the latest in a series of public disputes between Elon Musk and OpenAI. In March, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman, alleging breaches of their original contractual agreements regarding AI development. OpenAI responded by accusing Musk of attempting to exert control over the company, claiming that he wanted OpenAI to merge with Tesla or for himself to gain full control.
During its live-streamed event on Monday, OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, their new flagship AI model. The model offers GPT-4-level intelligence but boasts significant improvements in speed and capabilities across text, voice, and vision. OpenAI also announced that ChatGPT now supports over 50 languages, further expanding its accessibility and utility.
Elon Musk had previously departed from OpenAI, reportedly believing that the company would not succeed. According to Altman, Musk’s departure stemmed from his skepticism about OpenAI’s potential.
The unveiling of GPT-4o represents a significant milestone for OpenAI, providing faster and more efficient AI capabilities for users. Despite Musk’s criticisms, the advancements in AI models continue to garner attention and highlight the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence development.
