The Assam CM’s announcement came a couple of days after the arrest of two clerics who were reportedly involved in terror activities.
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said religious teachers, who come from outside, to the mosques and madrasas will have to register themselves on a portal of the state government. The Assam CM’s announcement came a couple of days after the arrest of two clerics who were reportedly involved in terror activities.
The Assam CM said that the government has made some Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) under which if an Imam comes to a village, he will have to inform about his visit to the local police station for verification. Once verified, he will be appointed as Imam by the village men. Sharma said that the local Muslim community has supported the government for this cause.
As per reports, the two terrorists were apprehended from Goalpara district by the state police. They have been accused of radicalising young Muslim men in the state and having links with terror outfit Al Qaeda. A case has been registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and a search operation is on to apprehend their associates.
The accused were identified as Abdus Sobahan, a cleric of Tinkonia Shantipur Masjid under Mornoi police station and Jalaluddin, a cleric of Tilapara Masjid under Matia police station.
Sharma had on Monday said that one the arrested terrorists was working as an Imam at a mosque. He said that the arrested terrorist had expanded his jihadi network in several villages. Six Bangladeshi people had reached the state to expand the network out of which one has been arrested by the agencies while the remaining five are absconding. The police have launched an operation to arrest them.
Sarma, however, said that there is no requirement for clerics of Assam to get themselves registered on the government portal. Only those who come from outside will have to register themselves.
