Vijayawada: An explosion in the battery of a new electric bike has caused the death of a 40-year-old man while injuring his wife and children in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada district. According to the report, the battery of the bike exploded causing fire in the bedroom during early hours on Saturday. As fire catches in the room, they all suffer severe burn injuries. They all were admitted at a nearby hospital the man was declared dead while the condition of his wife was said to be critical. Condition of two children, who suffered from asphyxiation, are stable.
According to the report, the deceased namely K Siva Kumar was a self-employed DTP worker who had purchased the electric bike a day before the incident. He had reportedly kept a detachable battery in his bedroom in charging mode and suddenly a blast occurred in it. Due to the blast, the bedroom catches fire and the family, which was sleeping in the room, came in contact with the fire.
After witnessing smoke rising from inside the house, neighbours broke the doors open and pulled out the family trapped inside. The victims were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. Sivakumar died while being shifted to hospital in an ambulance. Since his wife’s condition is critical, she has been put under close observation at hospital.
Police reportedly said that they have been ascertaining the exact cause of the explosion. Staff from the fire department have also made a visit to the scene to determine the cause. Police have also approached the EV company to check whether an electric short circuit could be the reason for the battery explosion. A case has also been registered under appropriate sections of law.
