Security has been tightened across Jammu and Kashmir after Indian Army troops gunned down two terrorists during a suspected infiltration attempt in Kupwara on Monday evening. The encounter took place in the Machhal Sector, a region near the Line of Control (LoC) that has seen repeated attempts at cross-border infiltration in recent weeks.
According to an official statement by the Indian Army, troops opened fire after detecting suspicious movement along the LoC in Kupwara district.
“Based on specific intelligence input by JKP and corroborated by sources and agencies regarding likely infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Machhal Sector, Kupwara on 13 Oct 2025,” the statement read.
Alert jawans challenged the suspects, who opened indiscriminate fire. In retaliation, security forces neutralised two terrorists and recovered a large cache of weapons and equipment from the site.
Search Operations Intensified Across J&K
In the aftermath of the gunfight, the Army confirmed that search operations are underway across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir to ensure no other infiltrators are active in the area. Additional troops have been deployed, and surveillance has been heightened along the LoC.
A senior security official said the operation was “swift and precise,” adding that winter infiltration attempts tend to increase before heavy snowfall, which often disrupts surveillance in high-altitude zones.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed security forces to remain on high alert with the onset of winter. He stressed that terror groups must not be allowed to exploit adverse weather conditions to infiltrate through the LoC or International Border.
The directive came during a high-level security review meeting in New Delhi attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Union Home Secretary, Director of Intelligence Bureau, Chief of Army Staff, DGP J&K, heads of CAPFs, and senior officials from the Army and the administration.
Growing Security Concerns Ahead of Winter
As snowfall approaches, infiltration attempts are expected to spike, making Kupwara and other LoC sectors sensitive zones for counter-insurgency operations. Officials have reiterated their commitment to neutralising any cross-border threats and ensuring the safety of civilians in border villages.
A senior Army officer said, “Our troops remain vigilant round the clock. Any attempt to infiltrate will be met with a strong and immediate response.”
