New Delhi: An NIA court on Wednesday sentenced Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik to life imprisonment in a terror funding case. Amicus curiae Akhand Pratap said Malik got all legal assistance before he was convicted in a case. Special Judge Parveen Singh clarified all sentences to run concurrently.
“In fact, just after Yasin Malik was convicted by a special NIA court on May 19, he was made to speak to his family in Srinagar from Tihar jail,” said Pratap. Earlier in the day, Malik had said he would not beg for anything even if the court sentences him to death.
Meanwhile, security was beefed up outside Yasin Malik’s home through deployment of security forces in the Maisuma locality as people gathered outside his residence.
Advocate Umesh Sharma said, “Two life imprisonments have been given to Yasin Malik, besides that, 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in 10 offences and Rs 10 lakh penalty have been awarded. All the punishments will run concurrently.”
Meanwhile, Nirmal Khanna, wife of IAF officer Ravi Khanna, a victim of a terror attack carried out by Yasin Malik, said, “It’s justice for victims of terror attacks carried out by him (Yasin Malik). Some might be satiated but I am not satisfied as I want the death penalty for him in my case.”
Earlier in the day, Khanna had said, “I honour whatever punishment the judges have awarded. They know better what punishment should be given in such a case…I’m 100% sure justice will be given to me.”
The Kashmiri separatist leader and chief of the banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) was sentenced to life imprisonment in a terror funding case.
Malik had pleaded guilty of terror funding, spreading terrorism and secessionist activity in Jammu and Kashmir in 2017. He was charged under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), the anti-terror law and sedition law of the Indian Penal Code. Malik had told the court he would not challenge the charges pressed against him.
