Chair of judges for the International Booker Prize 2024, Eleanor Wachtel, emphasized the power of novels to transport readers to uncharted territories, evoking new emotions and memories. In her statement, she remarked, “Our shortlist delves into expansive realms of the imagination, often portraying lives entwined with historical contexts or presenting a fresh perspective on the intersection of personal and political spheres.”
The six books that made it to the shortlist were selected by a distinguished judging panel chaired by renowned writer and broadcaster Eleanor Wachtel.
Joining her on the panel are acclaimed poet Natalie Diaz, Booker Prize shortlisted novelist Romesh Gunesekera, pioneering visual artist William Kentridge, and writer, editor, and translator Aaron Robertson. This diverse panel brings a wealth of experience and perspectives to the selection process.
The prize acknowledges the indispensable contribution of translators by awarding a £50,000 prize, split evenly between the author and translator (or divided equally among multiple translators).
Additionally, each shortlisted title receives a prize of £5,000, with £2,500 allocated to the author and £2,500 to the translator (or divided equally among multiple translators).
The International Booker Prize 2024 ceremony is scheduled for May 21 at 7 pm BST (11.30 pm IST).
