New Delhi: Amid escalating backlash over her remarks against actor Kangana Ranaut, the Congress party on Thursday replaced Supriya Shrinate as a candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Supriya Shrinate, who contested from the Maharajganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh during the 2019 polls but was unsuccessful against BJP’s Pankaj Chaudhary, has been replaced by Virendra Chaudhary.
The decision comes in the wake of widespread criticism following an offensive post on Kangana Ranaut shared from Shrinate’s Instagram account. In response, Supriya Shrinate clarified that the post was made by someone else with access to her social media and she promptly removed it upon discovery.
Expressing her desire to focus on her role as the party’s social media head, Supriya Shrinate revealed that she had requested the party not to field her in the elections and had even suggested a replacement candidate.
The Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to Shrinate regarding the controversial post earlier in the day, adding to the turmoil surrounding her candidacy.
In its eighth list of candidates announced on Wednesday, Congress unveiled 14 candidates across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Jharkhand. Among the notable names, Rao Yadvendra Singh will contest against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna constituency, while Pratap Bhanu Sharma will face former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Vidisha.
In Jharkhand, Kalicharan Munda, Sukhdeo Bhagat, and Jaiprakashbhai Patel have been nominated for various parliamentary constituencies. Telangana sees Suguna Kumari Chelimala, Tatiparthi Jeevan Reddy, Neelam Madhu, and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy as Congress candidates.
Uttar Pradesh nominations include Dolly Sharma, Nakul Dubey, Shivram Valmiki, and the replacement for Shrinate, Virendra Chaudhary, in Maharajganj.
