New Delhi: In a significant move towards promoting renewable energy and ensuring access to electricity for all, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the ‘PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ on Thursday.
This groundbreaking scheme, launched on February 13, 2024, comes with a whopping total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore aimed at installing rooftop solar panels and providing free electricity up to 300 units every month for One Crore households.
What is the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for Residential Rooftop Solar: Under this scheme, households will receive substantial financial assistance, including a CFA of 60 percent of the system cost for 2 kW systems and 40 percent for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity, capped at 3 kW. This translates to significant subsidies ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 78,000, depending on the system capacity.

Ease of Access: To facilitate the application process, households can apply for subsidies through the National Portal and choose a suitable vendor for installing rooftop solar. The portal will provide essential information such as system sizes, benefits calculator, vendor ratings, etc., aiding households in their decision-making process.
Low-interest Loans: The scheme also offers collateral-free, low-interest loan products of around 7 percent for the installation of residential rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW, further incentivizing adoption.
Model Solar Villages and Local Bodies Incentives: Each district will develop a Model Solar Village to encourage rural adoption of rooftop solar. Additionally, Urban Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions will receive incentives for promoting rooftop solar installations in their areas.
Job Creation and Environmental Impact: PM-Surya Ghar is not only expected to create around 17 lakh direct jobs but also aims to add 30 GW of solar capacity through rooftop solar installations in the residential sector. This initiative will generate 1000 BUs of electricity and reduce approximately 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over the 25-year lifetime of rooftop systems.
How to avail PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
To ensure maximum participation, the government has launched an extensive awareness campaign since the scheme’s inception. Interested households can register themselves on the official website https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in to avail of the scheme’s benefits.
