Hemant Soren was sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on Thursday, marking his fourth consecutive term in office. The grand ceremony took place at Ranchi’s Morabadi Ground, with Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administering the oath of office.
The event was a significant political gathering, as prominent leaders of the INDIA alliance—a coalition of opposition parties—attended to showcase their unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, and Bihar’s Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav were among the key dignitaries present at the ceremony.
Resounding Electoral Victory
Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance secured a decisive victory in the assembly elections, winning 56 out of 81 seats, leaving the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with just 24 seats. This sweeping win reaffirmed the public’s trust in Soren’s leadership and the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance.

The presence of top opposition leaders underscored the INDIA bloc’s resolve to challenge the BJP-led NDA on a united front. Rahul Gandhi’s attendance, alongside other prominent leaders, signaled the coalition’s commitment to coordinating efforts for upcoming electoral battles.
Hemant Soren’s Leadership Legacy
This marks a historic fourth term for Soren, who has been a prominent voice advocating for the rights of tribal communities and the socio-economic development of Jharkhand. Under his leadership, the state has seen initiatives focused on healthcare, education, and employment for marginalized sections of society.
The ceremony also served as a stage to project the INDIA bloc as a formidable force against the ruling NDA at the center. With Jharkhand being a politically significant state, this show of opposition strength is likely to have implications for the larger national political scenario.
