Senior Haryana police officer Y Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself dead at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday, officials said. The 52-year-old officer of the 2001 batch was known for his outspoken stance on issues concerning officers’ rights, seniority, and representation within the force.
Kumar had recently been posted as Inspector General (IG) at the Police Training Centre (PTC), Sunaria, Rohtak. His wife, Amneet P Kumar, an IAS officer and Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Foreign Cooperation, Haryana government, is currently in Japan as part of a delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Saini.
Police teams rushed to the house after receiving information about the incident around 1:30 pm. Officials said Kumar was found dead with a gunshot wound, and initial findings point towards suicide.
