As per the reports, Changchun in northeastern China has asked its 9 million residents to work from home and said it is going to start mass testing.
New Delhi: Almost after two years since the first Coronavirus case detected in China, its city Changchun has suddenly reported a new wave of Covid-19 resulting in situation of lockdown of the city. As per the new rules, only one person will be allowed out every two days to buy “daily necessities.”
Single-day Covid-19 cases have crossed 1,000-mark this week for the first time since the early days of the pandemic in 2020. Just three weeks ago, there were reports of less than 100 daily cases. However, on Friday there were over 1300 new cases.
The authorities, as an immediate measure, have either fully or partially closed several pockets with regular testing for people living in risk zones whether low, medium and high. The Chinese National Health Commission in a statement said they would make Covid-19 Rapid Antigen tests available for personal use and in clinics for the first time. These tests were restricted in China but since the Omicron variant is showing an increase in asymptomatic cases, the authorities have decided to facilitate them.

Authorities in Shanghai and other major cities have stepped up targeted lockdowns and testing to halt Omicron. Schools, cinemas, theatres and other crowded places have been closed while the online mode of teaching has been started for students.
In China’s major city Beijing, several residential compounds have been fully or partially locked down.
