According to reports, Mondal has been summoned by CBI on Sunday as well, at 2:30 pm in Kolkata, in connection with the post-poll violence case in West Bengal.
Kolkata: Moments after Trinamool Congress’s Birbhum district chief Anubrata Mondal was discharged from the SSKM Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata after a prolonged treatment, the anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) asked him to appear at 5:30 pm on Saturday in connection with a cattle smuggling case.
According to reports, Mondal has been summoned by CBI on Sunday as well, at 2:30 pm in Kolkata, in connection with the post-poll violence case in West Bengal.
It is important to note that Mondal got admitted to the hospital by complaining of breathlessness after the CBI issued summons to him. According to sources, CBI officials had paid him a visit at the hospital to ascertain his health condition as Mondal had sought from the CBI four weeks’ time to appear before the central agency in connection with questioning over his alleged involvement in cattle smuggling in Birbhum district.
The CBI had on September 21, 2020 filed a case against Border Security Force (BSF) commandant Satish Kumar and several others in connection with illegal cattle trade along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal which was taking place allegedly in connivance with public servants. During the investigation, Mondol’s name had cropped up.
On Friday evening, Mondal had returned to his home after spending 17 days at the state-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital, where he was admitted on April 6. The medical board of the hospital has suggested four-week complete bed-rest for Mondal, after which he will have to attend another round of check-up.
The CBI source said that the decision to call Mondal for questioning immediately was taken following discussions with the top officials at the CBI Directorate in New Delhi.
“We were keeping both the options open of either calling him to CBI office or going to his residence to question him there. But our senior officers in Delhi instructed us to call him today only,” the CBI source said.
