Chandigarh: The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government on Saturday withdrew the security cover provided to 184 persons, including former ministers, MLAs and private protectees.
In a letter dater April 20, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) had said, “Consequent to a security review based on current threat assessment, the competent authority has approved the withdrawal of security.”
Among those who lost their cover are former ministers Bibi Jagir Kaur, Madan Mohan Mittal, Surjit Kumar Rakhra, Sucha Singh Chottepur, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Tota Singh, and Gulzar Singh Ranike.
Family members of big names such as Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Gurdarshan Brar, IPS Gurdarshan Singh and Udaybir Singh, who is the son of former cabinet minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, will also lose their security covers.
Former IPL chief Rajeev Shukla, BJP’s star campaigner for the Punjab Assembly election Mahi Gill and former DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay’s son Sidhant lost their security cover in the April 20 order.
This is the second time the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government has removed the security covers of VIPs in the state. Earlier, the Punjab Police had on March 11 ordered the withdrawal of security cover of 122 former ministers and MLAs. Those who lost their security cover were Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Manpreet Singh Badal, Raj Kumar Verka, Brahm Mohindra, and Sangat Singh Gilzian and , Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and others had also lost their security covers. Former speaker K P Singh was also in the list.
According to the order, personnel posted on orders by the Supreme Court will not be withdrawn.
