New Delhi: In a significant move towards enhancing transparency and efficiency in the issuance of merit and participation certificates for sportspersons across the nation, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has mandated the adoption of DigiLocker by all National Sports Federations.
Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur, announced the directive, emphasizing that starting from June 1 of this year, only certificates distributed through DigiLocker by the Federations will be recognized for government and other benefits. Physical certificates will no longer hold validity post this date.
Explaining the rationale behind this initiative, Thakur highlighted the manifold advantages of utilizing DigiLocker for certificate issuance. These include seamless access to and sharing of certificates, elimination of the need for physical copies, and ensuring a secure environment for storing and verifying documents, thereby upholding their integrity and authenticity.

Furthermore, Thakur emphasized that this transition to digital certification will significantly reduce administrative burdens, minimize delivery time for certificates to deserving athletes, and underscore India’s commitment to leveraging technological advancements to curb malpractice.
Acknowledging the widespread usage of DigiLocker for educational and governmental certificates, Thakur stressed the importance of aligning sports certificates with this digital infrastructure. He emphasized that these certificates symbolize athletes’ dedication, effort, and achievements in their respective sports and should be easily accessible through modern and efficient means.
Addressing concerns about the implementation process, Thakur assured that the Ministry would facilitate the integration of DigiLocker with the IT systems of the National Sports Federations by April 30. Additionally, workshops will be conducted from May 1 to 31 to train officials on utilizing the DigiLocker platform effectively, alongside comprehensive test runs of the system.
The move towards digital certification marks a significant step towards modernizing the sports administration landscape in India, ensuring that deserving athletes receive timely recognition for their accomplishments while streamlining bureaucratic processes for the benefit of all stakeholders.
