Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to her homeland when the new caretaker government in Bangladesh schedules elections, according to her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

The claim comes days after Joy had told the media that his mother will move away from politics for good.

Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on Monday following weeks of intense and deadly protests, resigned amidst nationwide unrest. The caretaker government, led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on Thursday and is responsible for organising the upcoming elections.

In an interview with the Times of India, Joy, who is based in the United States, said, “For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election.”

Sheikh Hasina’s departure followed a wave of violence that claimed around 300 lives and left thousands injured. The student-led uprising culminated in her resignation, and her Awami League party was notably absent from the newly formed interim government.

Sheikh Hasina is currently staying in a safe house in the New Delhi area. There have been reports in Indian media suggesting that she might seek asylum in Britain, although the British Home Office has not commented on this matter.

On Thursday, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned that he had discussed Bangladesh with his British counterpart, though he did not provide further details.

“The External Affairs Minister had a conversation with Foreign Secretary David Lammy just a few hours back. The two leaders discussed the developments in Bangladesh and West Asia,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had stated during a media briefing on Thursday.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy also hinted at his potential entry into politics, stating, “I am sure the Awami League will take part in the election and we might even win,” signaling his readiness to support his mother’s party if necessary.
