A festive Christmas market turned into a scene of horror as a speeding BMW plowed through a crowd of revellers last evening, killing two people and injuring over 60. The driver, a 50-year-old Saudi man identified by German media as Taleb A, has been arrested.
The incident unfolded at the heart of Magdeburg, about 130 km from Berlin, and has sent shockwaves across Germany during the holiday season. Here are the key details:
The car rammed through the crowded Christmas market, leaving behind a trail of bloody carnage. At least 60 people were injured, some critically, as the vehicle tore through 400 metres of the market.
The driver, a Saudi national, has been living in Germany since 2006. Identified by German media as Taleb A, he is a psychiatrist residing in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, according to regional premier Reiner Haseloff.
Authorities believe the suspect acted alone, and the danger is considered over with his arrest.
Video footage shows police officers apprehending the bearded man near the damaged black BMW. Officers had their guns trained on him as he lay on the ground, with commands to “Lie down, hands on your back, don’t move.”
Chancellor’s Condolences
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his sorrow, stating, “This raises the worst fears.” He offered condolences to the victims’ families and praised the rescue workers for their dedication. Scholz is expected to visit Magdeburg on Saturday.

The attack follows a warning from Germany’s security agencies about Christmas markets being potential targets for Islamist-motivated individuals. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser urged vigilance during the festive season.
The United States expressed its shock and pledged assistance in recovery efforts. “The United States is ready to provide assistance as recovery efforts continue and authorities investigate this horrible incident,” said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Elon Musk’s Controversial Remarks
Tech billionaire Elon Musk criticized Chancellor Scholz, calling him an “incompetent fool” and demanding his resignation. Musk also voiced support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), calling them the “country’s saviour.” The German government acknowledged Musk’s comments but refrained from an official response.
Germany has witnessed a series of suspected Islamist attacks in recent months. In August, a Syrian suspect was arrested after a knife spree killed three at a street festival. Earlier, an Afghan man was arrested for fatally stabbing a policeman.
Authorities are working to establish the suspect’s motive, with the possibility of ideological influence being explored. The incident has reignited discussions about public safety during high-profile events.
Rising Concerns Amid Festivities
The attack has cast a shadow over Germany’s beloved Christmas markets, which draw millions of visitors each year. Security measures are expected to tighten as officials seek to reassure the public.
With Chancellor Scholz set to visit the site and a thorough investigation underway, the tragedy underscores the persistent threat to public gatherings and the need for vigilance during the holiday season.
