Curfew extended in Jodhpur till May 6 midnight; 140 arrested till now for violence

Jodhpur: The curfew imposed in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur over communal clashes has been extended till the midnight of May 6, said authorities. The police said as many as 140 persons, including those who were allegedly involved in inciting the clashes and those who took part in the clashes, have been arrested till now. The internet services in the city has also been suspended.

“Currently, the situation is peaceful. Till now, around 140 persons have been arrested and 18 cases have been registered. A meeting was held with BJP leaders today (Wednesday) and they have suspended their protest for now,” said ADG (Law and Order) Hawa Singh Ghumaria.

He added, “As per a preliminary survey, 29 two-wheelers, 21 four-wheelers, five shops and 13 bhawans were damaged. A complete report on the damage to properties will be sent to the government soon.”

On Monday night, moments before Eid celebrations, a clash broke out between the people of two communities over the alleged removal of flags in the Jalori Gate area.

According to sources, people of one community started raising slogans after a flag was put up on the statue of freedom fighter Bal Mukund Bissa and a banner related to Eid was strung up on the circle at Jalori.

A few protestors removed the flag and banner which caused an uproar. The members of the other community got angry and soon, clashes broke out between the two groups.

The police said stones were pelted from both sides and mild force had to be used to bring the situation under control. Sources said despite police action, the situation is still tense. Meanwhile, additional forces have been deployed to ensure no untoward situation arises.

Meanwhile, Chief Minster Ashok Gehlot, who had immediately sent ministers and officials to take stock of the situation, has blamed the BJP for the violence.
