Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the Kisan Samman Sammelan in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where he released the 17th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme.
This installment, amounting to over Rs 20,000 crore, was distributed to approximately 9.26 crore farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer. Additionally, PM Modi awarded certificates to more than 30,000 women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) as Krishi Sakhis, empowering them as para-extension workers in agriculture.
During his speech, PM Modi expressed gratitude to the people of Varanasi for re-electing him for a third term. He highlighted the strength and vibrancy of India’s democracy, noting the participation of over 64 crore voters in the recent elections, including 31 crore women, which he stated was the highest number of women voters in any country.
Modi underscored the importance of farmers, women, youth, and the poor in the government’s agenda. He emphasized the impact of the PM-KISAN scheme, which has transferred more than Rs 3.25 lakh crore to farmers’ bank accounts since its inception. He also highlighted the Krishi Sakhi initiative, aimed at creating ‘Lakhpati Didis’ to ensure income security for women in rural areas.
The Prime Minister discussed the broader vision of transforming India into a major agri-exporter, emphasizing self-reliance in pulses and oilseeds, and the global reach of local products through initiatives like the One District One Product Scheme.
‘One Indian food on every dining table’
He reiterated the goal of having at least one Indian food product on every dining table worldwide and supported sustainable agriculture through the Zero Defect-Zero Effect mantra.
Highlighting infrastructural improvements in Varanasi, PM Modi mentioned the progress in connectivity projects, such as the city ropeway, ring roads, flyovers, and enhancements at Varanasi’s railway stations and airport. He noted the development of sports infrastructure and other facilities in the region, reflecting a balance between preserving heritage and promoting modernization.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Governor and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, along with Union and state ministers, who joined the Prime Minister in reinforcing the commitment to farmer welfare and rural development.
