A tragic incident unfolded in East Delhi’s Ghazipur on Wednesday night as a speeding taxi careened through a bustling market, resulting in the injury of at least 15 individuals and claiming the life of a woman. Identified as 22-year-old Seeta Devi, a resident of neighbouring Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, the victim succumbed to the collision.
The driver, allegedly intoxicated at the time was apprehended by bystanders in Ghazipur and handed over to police. Among the 15 casualties at Ghazipur’s Budh Bazaar, seven individuals sustained critical injuries and were promptly transported to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital.
The taxi, en route to Mayur Vihar Phase 3, veered off course into the densely populated Budh Bazaar area around 9:30 pm, reportedly due to the driver’s inebriated state.
Footage from CCTV cameras positioned along the road captured the vehicle losing control, colliding with a pedestrian and his handcart, as well as several storefronts. Local residents, witnessing the chaos, intervened by smashing the car’s windshield as it attempted to flee the scene.
Subsequent footage revealed the taxi recklessly navigating the congested thoroughfare with residents in pursuit. The situation escalated as individuals managed to halt the vehicle, resorting to vandalism by damaging the car’s exterior before overturning it. Notably, images from the scene depicted both front airbags deployed within the vehicle.
Tensions escalated in the area upon the arrival of police as locals surrounded the officers and blocked traffic, prompting authorities to utilize mild force to disperse the crowd.
