Ukraine Russia News Update: On Friday, Ukraine and Russia announced their first prisoner exchange in nearly four months, freeing 150 individuals after negotiations mediated by the United Arab Emirates.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that 75 Ukrainian prisoners, including four civilians and the rest military personnel, were returned from Russia.
Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed that Ukraine handed over 75 people in a deal brokered by the UAE, as reported by the RIA news agency.
“After a long pause, another prisoner swap took place: 75 defenders and civilians were released from the enemy’s captivity,” stated Ukraine’s Coordinating Committee on Dealing with Prisoners of War. Accompanying this statement, pictures showed servicemen draped in blue and yellow national flags.
Ukrainian officials highlighted that among those returned were 19 defenders of Snake Island, a small rocky outcrop in the Black Sea that became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance early in the war when Ukrainian guards refused to surrender to Russian forces.
Additionally, the committee reported that as part of the swap, Russia handed over the bodies of 212 Ukrainian defenders.
Meanwhile, four Indian prisoners in Pakistan were repatriated to India this week, officials announced on Friday. The prisoners—Suraj Pal from Uttar Pradesh, Wahida Begum from Assam, her son Faiz Khan, and Shabir Ahmad Dars from Rajasthan—were returned to India on May 29 after completing their jail terms.
The specific charges against these individuals and the duration of their imprisonment in Pakistan have not been disclosed. The repatriation underscores ongoing efforts between India and Pakistan to address humanitarian issues related to imprisoned nationals.
This development occurs amidst a backdrop of complex diplomatic relations between the two countries, often marked by such prisoner exchanges as part of confidence-building measures. Further details regarding the circumstances of their arrests and incarceration remain unavailable at this time.
