In anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in for a historic third consecutive term, the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will convene today to finalise the list of cabinet ministers.
The grand ceremony, set for tomorrow evening, will see PM Modi and members of his new cabinet take the oath of office. Modi is set to become the first three-term Prime Minister since Congress stalwart Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 240 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections but fell 32 seats short of the majority mark. The support of four key allies is crucial for the BJP to achieve a majority: N Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which won 16 seats; Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) (JDU) with 12 seats; Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, securing 7 seats; and Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-RV) with 5 seats.
TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu and JDU’s Nitish Kumar have publicly accepted the proposal to elect Mr. Modi as the alliance’s prime ministerial candidate. Reports indicate they have also provided written support to PM Modi amid speculation that opposition leaders might approach them to stake a claim.

The focus now shifts to negotiations between the BJP and its critical allies, TDP and JD(U), both seeking prominent positions within the central government. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction and Chirag Paswan’s LJP-RV are also vying for key portfolios in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new cabinet.
Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc, defying exit poll predictions, posed a significant challenge to the BJP in a national election for the first time since the ‘Modi wave’ of 2014. The opposition alliance garnered 232 seats, falling 40 short of the 272-majority mark. The Congress, leading the INDIA bloc, secured 99 wins out of the 328 seats it contested.
