Lok Sabha elections: In a determined stance against what they perceive as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attempts to undermine democratic principles, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, representing the Opposition INDIA bloc, asserted today that they would remain steadfast in their opposition despite recent setbacks.
Kharge, speaking after a strategic meeting with alliance partners at his residence in Delhi, declared, “The INDIA bloc will continue to resist the fascist rule… We will take appropriate steps at the appropriate time to realize the people’s desire not to be ruled by the BJP.”
The Opposition’s hopes for a potential realignment suffered a blow when Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu opted to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), according to formal letters of support submitted earlier today.
Sources had previously hinted at the possibility of the INDIA bloc reaching out to Kumar and Naidu, both of whom have been associated with shifting political allegiances in the past. However, these hopes were dashed as the two leaders aligned with the NDA.

Uddhav Thackeray, an ally within the INDIA bloc, initially hinted at potential outreach efforts, but Kharge remained cautious, emphasizing the need for consultations with allies before charting the way forward.
During the recent strategy session, Kharge extended an open invitation to parties aligned with the fundamental values of the Indian Constitution’s preamble, emphasizing the bloc’s commitment to justice in all spheres.
The Opposition, buoyed by recent electoral gains, has demanded Prime Minister Modi’s resignation, asserting that the electoral outcome indicated a clear rejection of his leadership. Kharge, flanked by Sonia Gandhi, decried Modi’s alleged determination to undermine the people’s will.
With the BJP securing 240 seats and 293 with its allies, including contributions from Kumar and Naidu, the INDIA bloc, comprising 232 seats, continues to assert its presence, with the Congress alone holding 99 seats.
As political dynamics continue to evolve, the Opposition’s resolve remains firm, poised to navigate the complex landscape of Indian politics amidst ongoing challenges to democratic norms.
