Covid cases rise in Delhi amid ‘mask not mandatory’ rule

From April 5, the cases once again started rising and on April 7, the city saw 176 fresh cases of Covid and since then, the figure has not gone below 100.

New Delhi: In a sharp rise in the number of cases, the national capital of Delhi recorded 299 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, a rise of 97 cases from the previous day when the city saw 202 cases.

Although the figures are not as high as the peak of the pandemic, the uptick in the number of cases comes at a time when the Delhi government has removed the provisions of imposing fines on people for not wearing masks in public places.

After clocking a dip as low as 71 cases on March 27, the single-day Covid figures gradually kept rising. On March 28, the city saw 90 cases, followed by 95 cases on March 29 and subsequently breached the 100-mark on March 30 when Delhi saw 123 Covid cases. For the next two days the figures remained at 113, 131 and 114 and on April 3, it fell to 85 while 82 cases of Covid were recorded on April 4.

However, from April 5, the cases once again started rising and on April 7, the city saw 176 fresh cases of Covid and since then, the figure has not gone below 100.

Delhi Covid trend for last 30 days

On Wednesday, the positivity rate increased to 2.49% after 299 of 12,022 tested for the virus turned out to be positive, however, no deaths were recorded and according to the daily bulletin, only 11 persons are undergoing treatment at hospitals for Covid.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said, “There is no need to worry (about the slight uptick in Covid cases in Delhi). We are monitoring the scenario as of now. We will take measures and steps if any untoward situation arises.” Health Minister Satyendar Jain also assured that the government is keeping a “watchful eye” on the situation.
