Mumbai/New Delhi/Kolkata: In a major development after almost two years of Covid surge, the Maharashtra and the West Bengal state governments have decided to remove pandemic-related restrictions from the state. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has decided to remove the provisions to fine people for not wearing masks.

The Maharashtra government on Thursday announced to lift all the curbs from coming Saturday as the state is all set to celebrate the Marathi New Year known as Gudi Padwa. As per the order, people will be advised to wear masks as a precautionary measure but it will not be compulsory.

The office of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray tweeted and said,” All COVID restrictions in Maharashtra will be lifted, as we bring in the new year this Gudi Padwa!”

Meanwhile, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) also removed provisions of fines for not wearing masks in public places in the city. At present, there is a provision to fine Rs 500 for not wearing mask. The DDMA may also issue an advisory asking people to wear masks only in crowded areas. The decision to this effect was announced after a meeting of the DDMA chaired by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.

In West Bengal, the state government announced that it will withdraw all Covid-related restrictions but added that wearing of masks, hand hygiene and sanitisation of public places shall continue to be strictly observed until further orders.

It would be pertinent to mention that the Covid figures have dropped sharply in the country in the last couple of months. In the last 24 hours, the country reported 1,225 new coronavirus infections, the number of active cases dipped to 14,307.
