Itanagar: The Election Commission of India on Saturday announced a simultaneous Assembly election in Arunachal Pradesh along with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The two Lok Sabha seats in Arunachal Pradesh will go to polls in the first phase of the seven-phase Lok Sabha polls — on April 1. Meanwhile, the 60 Assembly constituencies of Arunachal Pradesh will vote on April 19. The counting of votes of both the Assembly and the Lok Sabha polls will be held on June 4.
2019 Arunachal Pradesh election
In the 2019 Arunachal Pradesh Assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the dominant force, securing 41 out of the 60 seats. The Janata Dal (United) won seven seats, the National People’s Party (NPP) clinched five, the Congress secured four, the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) got one, and Independents captured two seats.
With 37.36 percent of the vote share in the latest general election, the BJP attained the highest vote share by any political party in Arunachal Pradesh since the 1989 election. Winning 303 seats, the BJP solidified its significant majority and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) collectively secured 353 seats.

The BJP alone garnered 37.76 percent of the votes, while the NDA amassed 45 percent of the total 603.7 million votes cast. However, the Indian National Congress fell short of the 10 percent threshold required to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition, securing only 52 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) secured 91 seats, and other parties collectively won 98 seats.
2024 Lok Sabha polls
The Lok Sabha Elections will be conducted in seven phases. The current Lok Sabha’s term ends on June 16, necessitating the formation of a new House beforehand. Notably, the Lok Sabha election in 2019 were announced on March 10 and held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, with results declared on May 23.
The Election Commission has revealed that approximately 97 crore Indians will be eligible to vote in this year’s Lok Sabha elections, reflecting a 6 percent increase in registered voters since 2019. The electoral rolls were published nationwide in early February following an intensive Special Summary Revision 2024 process.
Efforts are currently underway to evaluate the feasibility of conducting simultaneous elections throughout India, with several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, gearing up to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls. The terms of the Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim Assemblies are scheduled to expire on June 11, June 2, June 24, and June 2, respectively.
