In a surprising turn of events, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, comprising Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, and the Congress, has secured a significant victory in Maharashtra’s recent Lok Sabha elections.
Winning 30 out of the state’s 48 seats, the coalition has not only strengthened its political standing but also dealt a blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which faced a dramatic decline in its electoral fortunes compared to previous elections.
Sharad Pawar, the veteran leader and founder of the NCP, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attributing the favorable political climate to him. Pawar’s acknowledgment of Modi’s role comes amidst scrutiny of the BJP’s diminished performance in Maharashtra, where the party won only nine seats, down from 23 in the previous election.
The alliance’s success is underscored by the NCP’s eight seats, Shiv Sena’s nine, and the Congress’ impressive tally of 13 seats, marking a resurgence for the latter after securing just one seat in 2019. Uddhav Thackeray, buoyed by Shiv Sena’s performance, addressed speculation about potential defections, affirming that those who remained loyal during earlier splits would continue with the alliance.
Reflecting on the broader implications of the election results, Thackeray emphasized the shift from a dominant BJP-led government to a coalition era in Maharashtra. He criticized BJP’s electoral strategy, particularly regarding the Ram Temple issue in Uttar Pradesh, noting that the outcome in Maharashtra demonstrated public skepticism towards BJP’s perceived invincibility.

During a joint press conference with Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan, Thackeray and Pawar expressed confidence in their alliance’s prospects for the upcoming Assembly elections. They credited their victory to voters rejecting attempts at religious polarization and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding democratic values.
Looking ahead, the MVA alliance appears poised to capitalize on its electoral gains, setting the stage for a potentially transformative period in Maharashtra’s political landscape. As the BJP recalibrates its strategy following setbacks across several states, Maharashtra’s election outcome serves as a critical indicator of shifting political dynamics on the national stage.
