T20 World Cup; In a stunning upset at the T20 World Cup, the United States of America pulled off a remarkable victory against Pakistan on Thursday, June 6th. Led by Monank Patel, the American team emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter that culminated in a Super Over showdown at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The match ended in a tie, with both teams scoring 159 runs in the allotted 40 overs.
During the Super Over, the USA, batting first, managed to accumulate 18 runs against Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir, with Aaron Jones and Harmeet Singh leading the charge. Despite only 10 runs coming off the bat, Amir’s erratic bowling, which included wides, contributed to the American tally.
Facing a challenging target in the Super Over, Pakistan’s hopes were dashed as they could only muster 13 runs against disciplined bowling from the USA’s former India U19 World Cup pacer, Netravalkar. His economical spell and crucial wicket of Iftikhar Ahmed secured a narrow 5-run victory for the USA in the Super Over.
This remarkable win propelled the hosts to the top of Group A, displacing India, with four points from two matches. Despite their debut in an ICC World Cup event, the USA outclassed Pakistan in all departments, making a significant mark in the cricketing world.
Earlier in the match, Pakistan’s top order faltered against the USA’s pace attack, experiencing a dramatic collapse. Although skipper Babar Azam and all-rounder Shadab Khan managed to steady the innings with a 72-run partnership, Pakistan could only muster a total of 159/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
In response, the USA lost opener Steven Taylor early but recovered well with captain Monank Patel and Andries Gous stitching together a crucial 68-run partnership for the second wicket. However, Pakistan’s pace trio, comprising Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Amir, staged a remarkable comeback in the death overs, restricting the hosts to 159/3.
The Super Over proved decisive as Pakistan’s poor fielding efforts allowed the USA to capitalize on crucial runs, ultimately clinching a memorable victory. Monank Patel was awarded the Player of the Match for his impressive innings of 50 runs off 38 balls, contributing significantly to the historic win for the United States of America.
