In a surprise turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trailing in two key Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, raising questions about the impact of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue on the polls.
The BJP lost by over 54,000 votes in Faizabad, where the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is situated. The Faizabad constituency is a significant loss for the BJP, as it is home to the historic Ram Mandir.
The Ayodhya Ram Mandir was built after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, and its construction has been a contentious issue. The BJP has made much of its construction and consecration ceremony in January 2024, using it to slam the opposition INDIA bloc for not attending the ceremony.
However, it appears that the BJP’s efforts to capitalize on the issue may not have paid off. The INDIA bloc is leading in 43 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, while the BJP-led NDA is leading in 36 seats, according to trends available on the Election Commission website.

The election results have significant implications for the upcoming state polls in Uttar Pradesh later this year. The BJP’s losses are likely to be a boost to the morale of opposition parties, which had been criticizing the party’s handling of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue.
