In a dramatic turn of events, Union Minister Smriti Irani, who famously unseated Congress’s Rahul Gandhi from his family stronghold of Amethi, found herself at a loss in the battle for supremacy this year. The Congress candidate and Gandhi family loyalist, K L Sharma, won the election and was declared victorious by 1,67,196 votes.
The margin reflects the potential for surprises that Uttar Pradesh holds in this election cycle. By 11 am, the INDIA bloc, comprising the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, was marginally ahead of the NDA in a closely contested battle.
This election witnessed Rahul Gandhi’s strategic decision to shift focus from Amethi to Raebareli, taking up his mother Sonia Gandhi’s mantle. In Raebareli, Rahul Gandhi maintains a lead of over 60,000 votes.
As a seasoned representative of the Gandhi family in both Uttar Pradesh bastions, Kishori Lal Sharma boasts an intimate knowledge of the constituencies and enjoys strong grassroots connections with party workers and constituents.
Endorsing the party’s choice, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while campaigning for Kishori Lal Sharma in Amethi, emphasized his four-decade-long association with the region, highlighting his dedication to public service.

The Congress continues to grapple with the aftermath of its defeat in 2019 when Rahul Gandhi lost to Smriti Irani after representing Amethi for three consecutive terms.
Historically, Amethi held significance for the Gandhi family, having been represented by Rahul’s uncle Sanjay Gandhi and later his parents, Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi.
Uttar Pradesh has become the center of a fierce struggle during the Lok Sabha election count, in a sudden turn of events. The NDA and the INDIA group, which includes the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress, are engaged in a furious battle in the state’s long-standing BJP stronghold, which began about four hours ago. Right now, the INDIA bloc has a slight advantage against the NDA.
The NDA leads in 34 seats (the BJP in 32 and the RLD in 2), while the INDIA bloc leads in 45 seats (the SP in 36 and the Congress in 9). These are the most recent data released by the Election Commission. This represents a substantial change from the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.
