India is experiencing extreme weather conditions, with a severe heatwave gripping parts of the country while others face heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Here’s a detailed look at the current weather scenario (last 24 hours) and forecast for the upcoming days.
Heatwave Conditions
Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions have been reported in several regions, including Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and parts of Madhya Pradesh are also significantly affected.
Maximum temperatures in these areas have soared to 44-46°C, with Prayagraj in East Uttar Pradesh recording the highest temperature of 47.6°C. These temperatures are 5-8°C above normal, causing considerable discomfort.
Night temperatures are also unusually high, with severe warm night conditions observed in parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan and Bihar have experienced warm night conditions as well.
Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms
While northern India bakes under a severe heatwave, other regions are dealing with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Meghalaya has reported exceptionally heavy rainfall, while Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Bihar have seen heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls. Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana, South Interior Karnataka, and Rayalaseema have also experienced significant rainfall.
Monsoon Progress
The Southwest Monsoon is advancing steadily. The Northern Limit of Monsoon currently extends through parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and more. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance into additional regions over the next 3-4 days.
Weather Systems and Forecast
A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are influencing weather patterns. Key forecasts include:
Northeast India: Widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over these regions, with exceptionally heavy falls in Meghalaya on June 18.
East India: Scattered light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls is anticipated over Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
West India: Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada will see scattered light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls, particularly in the Konkan region.
South India: Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are set to experience significant rainfall, with very heavy falls in Kerala and Coastal Karnataka.
Heatwave and Temperature Forecast
The severe heatwave is expected to continue in many parts of Uttar Pradesh until June 20, with Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and other regions seeing a decrease in intensity thereafter. Warm night conditions are likely to persist in Uttar Pradesh and parts of Punjab and Haryana.
Maximum temperatures in Northwest India will remain high over the next 24 hours before a slight decrease. East and Central India will see a gradual drop in temperatures over the next few days.
Safety and Precautions
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and follow local health advisories. In regions expecting heavy rainfall, people should be cautious of potential flooding and stay updated with local weather alerts.
