Uttar Pradesh: SHO rapes minor girl who had gone to report gangrape, NHRC issues notice to chief secretary

On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Police informed that the accused police officer, the SHO of the police station, was arrested from Prayagraj after he had gone into hiding.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report on the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl by the in-charge of a police station in the Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh when she had gone to report against a few men who allegedly gangraped her.

On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Police informed that the accused police officer, the SHO of the police station, was arrested from Prayagraj after he had gone into hiding. Prayagraj Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Prem Prakash said SHO Tilakdhari Saroj was arrested from near the Allahabad High Court.

The police also admitted that the SHO of the police station had reportedly raped the minor girl. According to reports, till now, the police have arrested six persons in the case. The incident came to light when the girl approached an NGO which highlighted her plight.

In a statement the NHRC said, “The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amount to human rights violation of the victim. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Government of Uttar Pradesh calling for a report within four weeks.”

It added, “According to media reports, carried today on 4th May, 2022, the officer concerned has been placed under suspension and an FIR has been registered against him. The relevant sections of POCSO Act have been applied. Other police officers posted at the police station have also been removed from the duty and a DIG level officer will be investigating into the case.”
