It may be recalled that Naveen had died while standing in a queue at a grocery store to get some food for himself and his friends who were stuck inside a bunker amid shelling from the Russian side for days.
New Delhi: Days after the Indian student from Karnataka, Naveen Shekharappa, died in Russian shelling in the capital city of Ukraine, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said efforts are on to bring back his body to India.
Speaking to reporters, Bommai said, “Efforts to bring back Naveen Shekharappa’s body is in progress. We are in touch with the Indian embassy, also spoke to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the matter.”
It may be recalled that Naveen had died while standing in a queue at a grocery store to get some food for himself and his friends who were stuck inside a bunker amid shelling from the Russian side for days. His friend later told the media that the incident came to light when a Ukrainian woman picked up Naveen’s phone and informed about his death.

Days after Naveen’s death, news trickled in of another Indian student being hit by bullet while trying to escape Kyiv. According to reports, the student was quickly admitted to the hospital.
Union Minister General (Retd) V K Singh, who is currently stationed at Poland to oversee the evacuation of stranded Indian students had said, “We heard reports that a student leaving Kyiv was shot at. He was taken back to Kyiv and immediately taken to the hospital.”
As per reports, there were nearly 20,000 Indians, mainly students, in Ukraine before the war between Russia and Ukraine erupted. Ministry of External Affairs reported that 17,000 Indians have left Ukraine after advisories were issued.
