In a dramatic showdown at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, South Africa secured a historic victory over Bangladesh in a low-scoring thriller. The Proteas, led by Aiden Markram, etched their name in the annals of cricket history by defending the lowest total ever in a T20 World Cup match, surpassing India’s achievement against Pakistan.
Opting to bat first on a sluggish and demanding pitch, South Africa faced an uphill battle as most of their batters struggled to find their rhythm. However, David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen turned the tide with a resilient 79-run partnership from as many balls. Klaasen’s composed innings of 46 runs from 44 deliveries and Miller’s contribution of 29 runs provided the backbone to South Africa’s innings.
With a modest total of 113 runs on the board, South Africa’s bowlers had their task cut out against Bangladesh’s batting lineup. Similar to Pakistan’s predicament against India, the Bangla Tigers found runs hard to come by on the challenging pitch.
In a nerve-wracking final over, Keshav Maharaj faced the daunting challenge of defending just 11 runs against Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali. Displaying nerves of steel, Maharaj delivered a masterclass in bowling, ultimately securing a narrow four-run victory for South Africa.
Bangladesh’s Towhid Hridoy emerged as the top scorer for his team with 37 runs, while Mahmudullah’s valiant effort of 20 runs fell short as he was caught out at the deep.
With this remarkable win, South Africa firmly positioned themselves for a spot in the Super Eight stage of the tournament. Having secured six wins in three matches, the Proteas are well on their way to progressing to the next phase of the competition.
