New Delhi: Days after a poor show in the assembly polls held across five states, a meeting of Congress Working Committee (CWC) members on Sunday evening decided that Sonia Gandhi continue to hold the top position of the party. In the past, however, Sonia Gandhi had offered to quit but it was rejected by the CWC. A rebel group within the party reportedly wants changes in the leadership and reforms in the party.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ambika Soni, Salman Khurshid, Ajay Maken, Rahul Gandgi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, P Chidambaram, Ashok Gehlot among others were present.

“There was a detailed discussion about the poll results in the five states and it was decided that Sonia Gandhi will continue as the party president. It was also discussed as how to take the party forward and to prepare for the upcoming elections,” said party’s Goa in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao after the party’s CWC meeting.

After the CWC meeting, termed the party’s poor performance in state assembly elections as a “cause of serious concern” and reaffirmed that the party will fight the forthcoming elections, including the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi. They made an appeal to Sonia Gandhi to lead the party from the front.

As per the reports, Sonia Gandhi offered resignations in front of over 50 leaders who had turned up for the CWC meeting saying that “whatever sacrifices we (Gandhis) have to make, we (Gandhis) will do” and that she was “willing to resign from the post” but the CWC “reaffirmed” its faith in her leadership.
