Opposition fields ex-union minister Margaret Alva as Vice Presidential candidate

NDA had on Saturday announced candidature of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar for the post of Vice President.

New Delhi: A day after NDA announced Jagdeep Dhankkar as it’s Vice Presidential candidate, all-united opposition on Sunday announced to field former union minister Margaret Alva as its candidate. Alva is a senior Congress leaders who was on several top positions of the party in past.

The announcement to this effect was made by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar after an all-party meet by the opposition parties in New Delhi.

Sarad Pawar, in a series of tweets, said, “Today we had talks with many colleagues of non-BJP political parties. We have decided to declare Mrs. Margaret Alvaji as the candidate for the country’s Vice Presidential election.”

“She has been a minister, has also been a member of Rajya Sabha, and has also held the office of Governor. He has vast experience in parliamentary work and administration. That is why we have announced the name of Mrs. Margaret Alvaji,” the NCP chief said.

“Most of the opposition parties have extended their support to our candidate. We tried to get in touch with Mrs. Mamta Banerjee, but could not get through as she was busy with a council. With this we also contacted Arvind Kejriwal ji. His decision is yet to come,” added Pawar in another tweet.

Communication in-charge of Congress Jairam Ramesh, in a tweet, said, “Margaret Alva, former Governor, former Union Minister, long time MP and very distinguished representative of India’s wonderful diversity is the common Opposition candidate for Vice-President.”

NDA had on Saturday announced candidature of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar for the post of Vice President. The announcement to this effect was made by BJP national president JP Nadda. Nadda, while addressing a press conference, had said that after several rounds of discussion, consultations and communications, we have decided to announce kisan putra (farmer’s son) Jagdeep Dhankhar as the BJP and NDA’s candidate for Vice President. Nadda said that Dhankar has established himself as a “people’s Governor”.

Taking Twitter handle, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, “Kisan Putra Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji is known for his humility. He brings with him an illustrious legal, legislative and gubernatorial career. He has always worked for the well-being of farmers, youth, women and the marginalised. Glad that he will be our VP candidate.”

Modi, in another tweet, had said, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has excellent knowledge of our Constitution. He is also well-versed with legislative affairs. I am sure that he will be an outstanding Chair in the Rajya Sabha & guide the proceedings of the House with the aim of furthering national progress.”
