Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday said it will increase the number of Covid tests after the civic body noted a spike in the test positivity rate to six percent. All officials of the BMC have been asked to ramp up testing on a “war footing” and testing labs have been asked to remain prepared.

Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal asked officials to step up vigil and reportedly told them that with monsoon around the corner, the city will see a rise in the symptomatic cases. Simultaneously, Chahal also asked the officials to push the vaccination drive in the 12-18 years category alongside the drive for the booster doses.

Chahal also asked the jumbo hospital in Malad to stay prepared in case the rate of hospitalisation rises. He also directed all field hospitals to remain adequately staffed and on alert. Chahal, in an advisory, did not even miss out the private hospitals and asked them to stay prepared.

“Assistant Commissioners in charge of wards must take daily reviews of covid situation in their wards and make strong intervention wherever required,” Chahal said. They were also directed to stay ready with medical teams and ambulances.

“Additional municipal commissioners are told to visit jumbo hospitals in their jurisdictions to ensure they are monsoon ready with de-watering pumps, structural stability certifications, fire safety mechanisms, house keeping, catering, paramedical and medical staff, oxygen manufacturing plants and fully equipped with medicines,” the municipal commissioner said.

Notably, Mumbai saw a more than 100% increase in the number of Covid cases reported in May as compared to the number of cases reported in April this year. On Tuesday, Mumbai clocked 506 fresh cases.
