‘Modiji silently endured false allegation for 19 years’: Amit Shah on clean chit to PM Modi in 2002 Gujarat riots

Amit Shah takes jibes at Rahul Gandhi for Congress protests during his interrogation by the Enforcement Directorate.

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected an appeal against the clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by a SIT in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi silently endured false allegations linked to the 2002 Gujarat riots for 19 years, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday. His comments came a day after the Supreme Court rejected a plea against the clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others by a Special Investigation Team in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots.

“Modi ji endured false charges in silence for 19 years, nobody did a dharna,” Shah told a news agency. Shah seemingly hinted at the widespread protest against the Enforcement Directorate questioning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a case of money laundering connected to the National Herald newspaper.

“Modi ji didn’t do drama while appearing before the SIT. If the SIT wants to question the Chief Minister, he himself is ready to cooperate, why protest?” Shah added. He also said, “Modi ji set an example, showing how the Constitution can be honoured. He was questioned but nobody staged a dharna and the workers didn’t come to stand in solidarity with him. If those who levelled allegations have a conscience, they should apologise.”

The plea against the clean chit was filed by Zakia Jafri, the wife of Congress leader Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in the riots. Ehsan Jafri was among the 68 people killed in what came to be known as the Gulbarg Society massacre in 2002. Upholding the clearance issued to Narendra Modi, who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat, by a Special Investigation Team, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition filed by Zakia Jafri.
