A Bangladesh MP who travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment has gone missing and is believed to have been murdered, according to a senior Bengal police officer. Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of the ruling Awami League, was last seen at a luxury housing complex in New Town.
Authorities reported that his phone has been turned off.
Preliminary investigations at an apartment in the complex revealed bloodstains, prompting suspicions that Anar was killed there and his body dismembered before being disposed of in nearby areas.
A forensic examination is anticipated to provide more details. The police emphasised that it is too early to speculate about motives and said they are focusing instead on locating the body of Anwarul Azim Anar.
“There was a missing diary, and Barrackpore police formed a team to find him. During the investigation, we received information through the Ministry of External Affairs. Today, we got a tip-off about a possible murder. Police traced his last-known location to this flat,” Akhilesh Chaturvedi, Inspector-General of Police in the Crime Investigation Department, told NDTV.
Chaturvedi confirmed that the CID has taken over the investigation. “A forensic team has been dispatched to the apartment, which belongs to Sandeep (last name unknown) from the Excise Department. He had rented it to an American national,” he stated, withholding further details.
The tenant has been identified as Akhtar-ul-Jamaan, he added. “… this much has come out so far. The rest is being investigated, and it would not be correct to say anything more at this stage. We are trying our best to resolve this case,” Chaturvedi noted.
The family of Anwarul Azim Anar alerted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about his disappearance. Her office contacted diplomats in Delhi and Kolkata, who then informed the police.
In Dhaka, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan described the incident as a “pre-planned murder.” Police in Bangladesh have made three arrests, suggesting an international dimension to the crime.
“It has been confirmed to us this morning by Indian police that he (Anwarul Azim Anar) was murdered. Based on the information provided, our police arrested those suspected of involvement. They are being interrogated, and the investigation is ongoing,” he told the media.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police are exploring multiple leads.
Anwarul Azim Anar arrived in Kolkata on May 12 and was staying with a friend, Gopal Biswas. He disappeared two days later, prompting Biswas to file a police complaint.
