Lok Sabha elections 2024 results: As the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha polls continues, the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have taken the lead in Maharashtra, with their respective leaders, Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray and Sharadchandra Pawar, emerging victorious.
According to the latest trends, Team Thackeray is leading on 10 seats in Maharashtra, while Sharad Pawar’s NCP is leading on seven seats. In contrast, the breakaway factions of Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP are leading on five and one seats, respectively.
The results come as a significant blow to the BJP’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which had been dominating the state polls since 2019. In the last election, the BJP and Shiv Sena won 41 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra, with the NCP winning 4 seats and Congress winning 1.
The split in the Shiv Sena and NCP had been a major factor in the state’s political landscape. In 2019, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena and the BJP were in an alliance, but the tie-up collapsed over the Chief Minister’s post. Thackeray then formed a government with the NCP and Congress, but was toppled by Eknath Shinde’s rebellion in 2021.

The latest results are a significant boost to both leaders, who have faced internal challenges and family feuds. For Thackeray, it is a vindication of his leadership and his decision to form an alliance with the NCP and Congress. For Pawar, it is a victory over his nephew Ajit Pawar’s rebellion and a testament to his enduring popularity in the state.
The outcome is also likely to have implications for the upcoming state polls in Maharashtra later this year. The BJP’s poor performance in Maharashtra could be a significant setback for its campaign in the state.
