New Delhi: A Delhi court on Saturday sent five of the prime accused facing charges under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) in connection with the Jahangirpuri violence to eight days’ police custody. The accused, Ansar, Sonu, Salim, Dilshad, and Ahir, were in police custody since their arrest and the law enforcement agency later imposed charges against them under the NSA.

Four other accused were also sent to 14 days judicial custody in connection with the Jahangirpuri clashes during a procession on Hanuman Jayanti. The police had produced all the nine accused before the court demanding their custody. They were presented before the court through videoconferencing.

As per the report, the Crime Branch said before the court that the matter is very serious and sensitive hence requires further probe. They added that an investigation is needed to trace the other accused involved in this case. It was reportedly said that the accused might be required to be taken to West Bengal and other places in the course of the investigation. The police reportedly sought eight-day remand of the accused persons.

On Sunday, a day after clashes broke out between the two communities in the Jahangirpuri area, the Delhi Police had arrested 20 persons for their involvement in stone-pelting and firing at policemen and civilians. According to reports, the police have also apprehended two minors in connection with the violence.

The police had claimed to arrest the accused who shot at Delhi Police sub-inspector Medalal Meena and has recovered a country-made pistol from his possession. Ansar, considered to be a main accused for instigating people for firing and stone-pelting, has also been arrested by the police. He had reportedly brought a few people with him and had started arguments with the members of the procession near the mosque. A few more arrests were made by the police later.

The police had produced 14 of the accused, who were arrested, at a local court. Two accused were sent to police custody while the remaining 12 were sent to judicial custody.
