Dhankar, on August 6, became the new Vice President of India. He had defeated all-opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a huge margin. The NDA candidate had secured 528 votes against Alva’s 182 votes.
New Delhi: Days after getting elected as new Vice President of India, veteran politician from Rajasthan and former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Thursday took oath. Dhankar’s oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu, a tribal woman from Odisa who was elected as new President of India recently. With assuming the office, Dhankar replaced M Venkaiah Naidu as Vice President and assumed office as Chairman of Rajya Sabha by default.
With the taking oath by newly elected Vice President, congratulations poured in as Prime Minister, President and senior leaders from across the political parties wished him. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a tweet, said, “Attended the oath-taking ceremony of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji. I congratulate him on becoming India’s Vice President and wish him the very best for a fruitful tenure.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated Jagdeep Dhankar. Shah tweeted, “I congratulate Shri @jdhankhar1 ji on taking oath as the 14th Vice President of India. Dhankhar ji has always set high ideals in public service keeping the national interest first. I am sure that his vast experience will be of great benefit to the country.”

Out of the total of total 780 electors, 725 had cast their ballots but 15 votes were found to be invalid. The turnout was 92.94 per cent. NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar had secured 74.36 per cent. He has the highest winning margin in the last six vice presidential elections held since 1997.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with BJP chief JP Nadda, had gone to congratulate Mr Dhankhar on his election as the Vice President. All-opposition candidate Margaret Alva also congratulated Dhankhar on the win.
Apart from NDA’s votes, Jagdeep Dhankar was supported by non-NDA MPs like Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal, Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party, Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party, Akali Dal and the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena. These parties have a total of 81 MPS in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
