Delhi: In an unsettling development, an Indian Army jawan on leave has gone missing since Monday in Jammu and Kashmir and his phone was found switched off, said the police. The jawan, identified as Sameer Ahmad Malla, had come home after his wife gave birth to their second child.

On Monday afternoon, Malla had lunch and left home and since then he is reportedly missing. Malla is a soldier with the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry.

His family members, who have been looking for him for the last two days, said they suspect the role of militants behind Malla going missing. A media organisation also quoted his family members as saying, “If he has done something wrong, please forgive him and release him. We will make him resign from his job.”

Asked if militants could be behind the abduction of Malla, Budgam Superintendent of Police Tahir Saleem said, “We are conducting an inquiry. Nothing can be said at this point of time.”

It is worth mentioning that Malla’s role had earlier come under the scanner for driving Major Leetul Gogoi and a girl to a hotel. In 2017, Gogoi was accused of using a human shield to protect himself from the attack of locals during the bypolls. Later, he was punished for fraternizing with a local girl.

Malla’s family members also informed that he ever since on leave, he would spend the night at his in-laws house with his wife and newly-born child and return home in the morning. Monday morning he had returned home and had told his mother he would he would stay the night at his in-laws. However, after leaving home post-lunch, his phone was found to be switched off and the jawan has not returned since.
